چکیده

The Army Strategy for the Environment applies an ecosystem approach to managing natural resources on Army installations. It incorporates the principles of sustainability across the Army into all functional areas. We conducted investigations to develop critical data required for successful management of Army installations in a sustainable manner and for the knowledge-based decision making. Assessment and protection of the terrestrial environment at Army testing and training ranges is being advanced by developing and applying scientifically based ecotoxicological benchmarks that identify concentrations of energetic materials (EM) in soil that present an acceptable ecological risk for biologically-mediated processes in soil. Without such ecotoxicological benchmarks, the current state of knowledge concerning the nature and extent of residual contamination with EM at Army installations is insufficient to ensure management of training and testing ranges as sustainable resources. We investigated the effects of the nitrogen-based organic EM compounds 2,4-dinitrotoluene (2,4-DNT), 2aminodinitrotoluene (2-ADNT), 4-aminodinitrotoluene (4-ADNT), and nitroglycerin (NG) on soil function endpoints, including litter decomposition and the enzymatic activity, in Sassafras sandy loam (SSL) soil individually amended with nominal EM concentrations ranging from 10 to 10000 mg/kg. Benchmark data will be made available for use in Ecological Risk Assessment of terrestrial habitats at Army testing and training sites.

Functional and structural parameters to assess the ecological status of a metal contaminated area in the tropics.

Ecological parameters (soil invertebrates, microbial activity, and plant community) were assessed in a metal contaminated site in an abandoned lead smelter and non-contaminated reference sites, as part of an ecological risk assessment (ERA). Vegetation cover inside the smelter area was lower and presented a more homogenous species composition than outside. A more simplified and less abundant ve...

Ecological Risk Assessment and Source identification of PAHs by PMF model in petroleum contaminated soils; West of Kermanshah province

We collected soil samples at 23 sites from the petroleum contaminated soils (PC) in the west of Kermanshah province to investigate the sources and ecological risk of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). In this study, source apportionment has been carried out using Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF).The total PAHs concentration, have a mean value of 92.79 mg/kg, ranging from 7.37 to 609.67...

A Review on Impact of E-waste on Soil Microbial Community and Ecosystem Function

The ever increasing pile-up of electronic waste in dumping sites, especially in developing countries such as China, Pakistan, India and several African countries, might have caused a significant alteration in the microbial community of the contaminated sites. This change in the microbial population may have significant impact to the soil ecology function. The major pollutants of electronic wast...

Deriving site-specific soil clean-up values for metals and metalloids: Rationale for including protection of soil microbial processes

Although it is widely recognized that microorganisms are essential for sustaining soil fertility, structure, nutrient cycling, groundwater purification, and other soil functions, soil microbial toxicity data were excluded from the derivation of Ecological Soil Screening Levels (Eco-SSL) in the United States. Among the reasons for such exclusion were claims that microbial toxicity tests were too...
